Worcester changes worker’s comp, life insurance provider
(April 7, 2017) At the last regular meeting of the Worcester County Commissioners, Human Resources Director Stacey Norton said she needed more time to suggest a replacement for the county’s life and long term disability provider because of a 28 percent hike in rates.
Though negotiations with Sun Life, the county’s former provider, was fruitful in that the rates came down to a seven percent increase, new provider Guardian was able to reduce costs overall by three percent and offer a lower premium.
Sun Life’s final negotiated rate was an estimated $9,300 increase with an annual premium of about $135,000, while Guardian offered a savings of about $3,400 and a premium of about $122,000.
The county’s current contract requires a premium of about $126,000.
Though the premium figure could change depending on how many county employees opt in to the system, the commissioners were confident enough that savings would be realized and voted to accept the change.
