(Sept. 29, 2017) The Stephen Decatur girls’ cross country team won last Wednesday’s nine-school meet on its home course in Berlin, while the boys’ squad finished in second place.

“I think we did OK overall,” Decatur Coach Jody Stigler said. “I thought [junior] Kailey [Andrews] was probably our standout performer for the girls and [senior] Jack [Reimer] for the boys. These two have been our most consistent runners this year, which was probably to be expected. [Junior] Erica Hicks also ran well and was our second girl to finish.”

The Lady Seahawks scored 25 points for the victory. Snow Hill came in second place, with 64 points, followed by Cambridge (66).

Andrews crossed the finish line second overall (25:37.2). Also contributing to the victory was Hicks (fifth, 26:37.2), freshman Mary Mergott (sixth, 27:06), senior Maya Knepp (seventh, 27:12.5) and junior Dori Krasner (ninth, 27:32.7).

Cambridge took top honors in the boys’ competition, recording 40 points. Decatur tallied 72 points and Pocomoke finished in third place with 88.

Reimer led the Seahawks, completing the race in 19:43.2, good for third place overall. Sophomores Austin Cheynet (10th, 21:41.9), Sam Rakowski (16th, 22:31.8), junior Chad Fischer (21st, 23:12) and freshman John James (22nd, 23:16.1) also scored points for Decatur.

“We do continue to see improvement, although it is hard to tell based on the times from this week because our course [with hills] is significantly harder than any of the courses that we have run previously,” Stigler said. “We currently have some sick kids and some that are injured. Some of them tried to run and ran through the pain/sickness to help the team, which I thought was admirable.”

Decatur will participate in the Tidewater Fall Classic on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, at 3:45 p.m.
