(Sept. 8, 2017) The Stephen Decatur golf team finished in second place during Tuesday’s seven-school match at the Ocean City Golf Club in Berlin.

“To say the team is very disappointed is an understatement. Often coaches use the phrase ‘there’s no excuse for our performance,’ however, in this case I think we may have a legitimate excuse,” said Decatur Coach Jim Krall. “The first day back to school can be a hard adjustment for teenagers. Not only are they not used to sitting in a desk for six hours, which can be very exhausting mentally and physically, but they also have so much running through their minds.

“In order to play solid golf a player must have a clear mind and be physically fit to perform … I feel the advantage of being well rested with a clear mind made the difference today” Krall added.

James M. Bennett won the season opener with a score of 163. Decatur shot a 167. Parkside took third (214).

Senior captain Matt Kinsey led Decatur with a 40. Junior Emily Malinowski carded a 41 and junior Hayden Snelsire a 42. Senior Spencer Carbaugh shot a 44. Sophomore Brady Leonard also tallied a 44.

“One thing is for sure, it’s going to be a battle all season against Bennett,” Krall said. “I sound like a broken record when I say that we must bring our ‘A’ game to every match to have a chance of winning.”

The next golf match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at River Run Golf Course in Berlin.
