We’re looking for a Bayside championship and a long run in the playoffs.”

(March 23, 2018) With the talented group of boys he has, Stephen Decatur Coach Scott Lathroum is excited to get the 2018 lacrosse season started.

“I can’t wait to see how far we go and how good we can get,” he said. “I told the guys, ‘We’ve got a good group this year. We can do some damage here.’ I’m fortunate to have the team I have.”

Lathroum said the Seahawks are solid all over the field.

“We have five or six really strong midfielders and three or four really good attackmen, and the defense is playing well,” he said. “They’re all getting along, they’re working hard and they have great chemistry. And, they’re having fun.”

Lathroum, now in his 14th season as head coach, said he is pleased with what he has seen so far. He is looking forward to getting players back on the field who have been out with injuries.

“I’m really happy with where they are,” he said. “We have a lot of experience, a lot of energy, ball movement is good, they’re patient on offense. It’s fun to watch.”

Twenty-five players make up Lathroum’s squad. Fourteen are varsity veterans.

In 2017, the Seahawks finished with a 6-8 record. The season ended with a loss in the 3A/2A East Region Section I semifinals.

The team has a senior captain on each of the lines: Charlie Coates on attack, Collin Eichelberger in the midfield and Hayden Zaiser on defense.

“They’ve done a good job,” Lathroum said. “Everyone looks up to them.”

Eichelberger and Zaiser were both presented Bayside South First Team honors for their performance during the 2017 season.

Eichelberger was also a team captain last year. He was second on the team in scoring, netting 24 goals. He also had 14 assists.

“I have a lot of experience over the years … so I feel like I can teach the younger players how to get through a game and make good decisions,” he said.

Eichelberger has been on the team since his freshman year.

“I think we’re looking really good. I’m excited,” he said.

Joining him in the midfield will be veterans, seniors Dominic Klebe and Liam Deck, junior Kevin Beck and sophomore Eric Gwin.

Junior Collin Eitel (2017 Bayside South Honorable Mention) will play in the midfield and take face-offs.

“He’s a very good face-off guy. I’m happy to have him,” Lathroum said.

“I think it’s pretty important, because if I win the face-off then we have the ball, and if we have the ball it’s a chance to score,” Eitel, a two-year varsity player, said. “I think I’ll be able to get the ball a lot in the games and create a lot of fast breaks and easy goals.

“This is probably one of the better teams I’ve played for,” he continued. “We’re looking for a Bayside championship and a long run in the playoffs.”

Coates received Second Team accolades and was third on the team in scoring last season, tallying 23 goals. He had 14 assists.

Lathroum will count on Coates, who has been on the team for three years, to run the offense.

“Being one of the older people on the team, kids kind of look up to me and, just playing in a lot of games, I have a lot of experience,” he said. On attack, I’ll be able to slow the ball down and speed it up, control the tempo of the game and create offense.”

Veterans, senior Quinn Ebaugh, junior Xan Johnson and sophomore Andrew Ball (long pole), will control the defensive end.

Lathroum said he expects junior newcomers, Jack Remmell (attack) and Josh Mueller (midfield) to contribute.

“We’re in a lot better shape than we have been in previous years,” Coates said. “We’re all good friends and we just play together as a team really well.”
