(May 11, 2018) The Stephen Decatur softball team will battle the Chesapeake Cougars of Anne Arundel, on Monday at 4 p.m. in Pasadena, in the second round of the 3A East Region tournament.

Both squads received first-round byes. The Chesapeake Cougars earned the No 1. seed in Section II of the 3A East, while Decatur sits in the No. 4 spot.

“This team has the potential to be absolutely amazing and unstoppable, but we tend to get in our own way, which is extremely frustrating,” Decatur Coach Cheryl Harte said. “We’ve shown how great we can be when we can pull it all together, but that seems to be the trick for us.”

Decatur ended the regular season with a 9-9 record and some unfortunate luck.

“We’ve had four season-ending injuries on our team, so just when we think we’ve got a solid defense and offensive lineup, somebody gets hurt,” Harte said. “It’s been rough, but I’ve been impressed with how the girls have stuck together through their highs and lows. This team has meshed together better than any other team I’ve had the privilege to coach.”

In order to be successful, Harte said the Lady Seahawks must be “mentally tough.”

“We can’t allow our physical errors to impact our mental because as soon as that happens we completely take ourselves out of the game without a fighting chance,” Harte said.
