(June 30, 2017) Maryland Natural Resources Police say an electrical issue sparked a personal watercraft fire last Saturday afternoon in the ocean off Ocean City.

NRP officers and the Coast Guard rescue crews were sent to the fire around 3:20 p.m. to the waters roughly 800 yards away from the shore near the Boardwalk fishing pier. When they arrived, one 1996 Sea-Doo personal watercraft was engulfed in flames.

Kyle E. Ayres, 18, of Hallwood, Virginia, was driving the Sea-Doo shortly before the fire.

“He told officers that he noticed the seat was getting hot, there was brown smoke and front compartment was getting warm,” NRP Public Information Officer Candy Thomson said. “A friend was driving another Sea-Doo near him, so he got aboard that one. Shortly after he dismounted, his jet ski caught on fire.”

After the fuel burned off, NRP officers towed the scorched craft to the West Ocean City boat ramp.

Ayres estimated that the damage was $3,000 and a total loss, Thomson said.

NRP found no violations in its investigation.
