First high school tourney complete, next event July 9

(June 30, 2017) The first Summer High School Tennis Tournament took place June 4 at the Ocean City Tennis Center on 61st Street and included 27 athletes from seven schools competing to earn a spot in the Grand Prix Finals, slated for Aug. 27.

Both boys’ divisions were a tight battle from top to bottom. In the Gold Flight, Zeth Weaver, of James M. Bennett High School, scored an 8-3 victory over Adam Pizza, of Worcester Prep. Bryan Sebaraj finished third.

The Silver Flight saw James M. Bennett players capturing the top two places. Eddie Nieberding went undefeated in his three matches to take first. Patrick Sebaral finished in second with a 2-1 record.

In the Girls’ Gold Flight Division, Kathryn Allen of North Dorchester High School took the championship with an 8-2 victory over Kasey Lee of Pocomoke High School.

Karlie Allen, of North Dorchester, grabbed third place over Abbey Sterling, of Parkside High School, winning 8-3.

The Girls’ Silver Flight battle saw James M. Bennett players Trinity Weaver and Emma Murphy tie for 39 games. Kelli Moreno, of James M. Bennett, took second place with 33 points each.

This was the first of three tournaments in the Grand Prix Summer Circuit at the Ocean City Tennis Center. The next two tournaments will be on July 9 and Aug. 6.

The top four players in the previous Gold and Silver Flights will be invited to play in the Grand Prix Finals on Aug. 27. This event is open to any player who played high school tennis on the Eastern Shore. To sign up, call the Ocean City Tennis Center at 410-524-8337.
